My role was to understand the users and develop personas that effectively capture the needs and goals of each. In addition, I was to build an intuitive and cohesive interface to engage and delight the users. I lead user research, interviews and developed prototypes and wireframes. I lead our Agile team with 2 week sprints and an iterative design approach.
We interviewed several users who are involved at different stages of the process which led to our four main personas; hiring managers, recruiters, service providers and new employees. I conducted contextual interviews with multiple stakeholders and also observed their daily tasks through shadowing.
In a company-wide hackathon, my team and I won first place with our innovative solution to the continued employee on-boarding nightmare that was wasting significant time and money throughout the company. Our challenge was to build a solution that would provide structure and consistency for hiring managers, downstream service providers and new employees. With over 9 different forms and processes throughout the company, teams like HR and the Help Desk were unable to provide a repeatable method. We discovered that most new hires were not productive for at least 5-10 days after hire due to lack of equipment, permissions, desk space, etc. Our focus was to redefine the new hire provisioning/on-boarding process to ensure every employee is fully functional on their first day.
The client was our internal HR partners as well as hiring managers, corporate service teams (the help desk, facilities, desktop services, etc) and new employees. Each persona had different needs and expectations from the app.
After thorough user research and the development of personas, the next steps were to get feedback on initial paper prototypes and wireframes to develop a clearer understanding of the final design.
I then developed higher fidelity prototypes in Sketch which were pushed up to Invision to get give the users a more realistic experience and the chance to leave comments.
Our final designs were provided to the developers to build the application in Vue.js using the Vuetify design component framework.
Using inspiration from the innovation team, we built a physical agile board that was not only fun and informational for the project but also key to our success.
My favorite design tool is Sketch because it allows the design team to create various iterations and document decisions.
I found that white boarding with the developers to walk through the site design and interactions reduced confusion and time lost.
Maintaining a consistent design system allowed for rapid prototyping and a common understanding of design standards amongst the team.
As an agile team we produced an iterative design, releasing features in two week sprints. Our feature sets were based off of user feedback and surveys to provide the most valued functionality to our clients. All in all, this project was a huge success for our team that left our users asking for more!
